Handling a sale to a customer who has exceeded the credit limit
You can set a default credit limit for all your customers (To set default credit terms for all new customers). You can also set a credit limit for an individual customer (To set or change credit terms for a single customer).
To make these limits useful, you can set a preference in the Preferences window - Sales view to be either warned or prevented from recording an invoice if the customer's credit limit is exceeded.
If you do both those things -- set a credit limit for a customer and select the Credit Limit preference -- when you enter a sale for the customer:
- An alert message appears when you select the customer card if the customer already exceeded the credit limit.
- An alert message appears when you try to record the invoice if the limit is not yet reached, but will be passed with the amount you enter in the current invoice.
The alert message you receive is determined by the choice you made when you selected the Credit Limit preference:
- If you chose Warn and Continue, the message informs you that the credit limit either has or will be exceeded and you can either continue with the sale or cancel it.
- If you chose Prevent Unless Overridden, the Credit Limit Override window appears, with information about the invoice and the customer's credit status. You cannot continue with the sale unless you are authorized and have the Override Password.
